This post is about my relationship with my girlfriend and a few great travel tips we’ve come up with from our travels around the world.

Maybe some of you hadn’t picked up on this, and though we were as subtle about this as we could be, I’m still surprised that so many people hadn’t clued in yet. So just in case it’s not crystal clear, I want to make it more than obvious that I’ve been in an exclusive, committed relationship with my girlfriend, Sheiryn Aisiqa, since late 2009, and we’d been dating since we met on my first week in Singapore in 2008.

Sheiryn is a Singaporean model and image consultant of mixed racial ancestry. She’s also Asia’s top female dating coach and has been coaching since 2008, longer than any other infield dating coach in Singapore.

That I have a girlfriend might come as shock to those superficial readers who can’t even take the trouble to do a bit of basic reading before contacting me with a long list of dating questions, even though I’ve mentioned this fact in countless media interviews, on my FAQ, on my bio on this blog, in the Aura Dating website bio, and Sheiryn even mentions this in her own online web presence. Recently, CLEO magazine even did a photoshoot and feature interview on us as a couple in their Valentine’s Day issue! So read up first before contacting me!

Some of these superficial readers (mostly hailing from one of the judgmental, moralistic, backward and conservative Asian sub-cultures–I won’t name names here but you probably know who you are) just assume that I live a lifestyle of one-night stands, threesomes, orgies, boozing, snorting coke off a stripper’s butt, and lord knows what other sinful activity. While at some point in the past 8 years, I’m sure I’ve done some of those things they’re accusing me of, it’s a fact that I am not now–to borrow a term from one misguided reader–living a a “loose” lifestyle.

On one count, though, these critics have something correct–the life of a player, pick up artist, or playboy is often very selfish and self-centered. They’re right to look askance at such lifestyles.

What I now seek most is fulfillment through making the world a better place for other people, enriching the lives of others, and just plain doing good in the world.

Many of my clients, approach coaches, and advanced Aura members are still seeing, dating, juggling multiple women and meeting more every week. But I grew out of my “sowing the wild oats” phase after over four full years of “being intimate” (yes, that’s a euphemism) with hundreds of women and inadvertently getting myself into the craziest of predicaments.

While I don’t encourage it, I do understand why men often (often but not always) need to go through such a stage of “sowing their wild oats” or burning off this layer of karma, as it’s something I had to go through in order to be happy now and to be who I am today. Unlike 97% of the men in this world, I’ll never wonder whether the grass is greener on the other side or wonder “what if,” because I’ve already been there and done that. And in the course of my journey, I’ve developed considerable skills, understanding, and experience in social intelligence and social dynamics to enable me to more fully enjoy what I do have now.

Since late 2009, I’ve chosen to focus my attention on one wonderful woman–who gives me all the love, romance, and sexual fulfillment I seek–and channel my excess testosterone-driven energies into more productive pursuits (I’m planning to follow up with a post for the more advanced audience, which expands on philosophy from Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, as well as many other sources), such as growing this company and my other investments and doing more good in the world through charity work and just plain trying to make the world a better place.

In fact, drawing on the extensive and cutting-edge research of Professor John Gottman and others (more below), a major focus in the Mastery level curriculum of Aura Dating Academy is How to Succeed in Long-Term Relationships, whether these relationships are open or exclusive. I am able to teach from my relatively extensive personal experience, having been married, divorced, juggling several girlfriends at once, and now happily committed to a wonderful woman.

One thing that sets apart Aura Dating Academy from pick up artist companies or PUA schools is our emphasis on happiness, fulfillment, and building lasting relationships, which is why I’ve been spending the past few years studying the mountains of research on couple’s psychology, counseling, and therapy. In his famous book, Blink, Malcolm Gladwell tells the story of John Gottman, who can predict with 95% accuracy, after observing an hour of a couple talking, whether that couple will still be married fifteen years later. After just fifteen minutes of observation his accuracy is still at 90%. Attempts by marital therapists, graduate students in psychology, newlyweds and recently divorced faired no better than chance to predict the outcome based on the videotapes of couples. There were just so many things going on in the conversations, and so much to digest, absorb, and process, that the patterns were difficult to discern. The point is that Gottman has found the very few select “indicators” that predict performance. And yes, we at Aura Dating Academy teach these and much more in our core curriculum.

This emphasis on successful long-term relationships has grown, like all my passions and interests, out of the trajectory of my personal life. In this case, I’m fortunate to have as my partner, Sheiryn.

Recently, we were featured in CLEO magazine in an article about how opposites attract, something I totally believe in. For most people, opposites don’t attract because most people prefer what’s comfortable and rarely challenge themselves on a regular basis to step outside their comfort zone and learn new things. However, for people who want to continually mature and grow, opposites do attract if they are complementary opposites. In other words, they see in the other person the traits, knowledge, or experience they lack and wish to learn or develop in themselves.

Some excerpts:

“We complement each other. She keeps me young, and I bring her more mature perspectives. When you are comfortable in a relationship, you tend to think your partner accepts you for everything, but she continually challenges me, and in turn I want to become a better person for her.

“As a dating coach, I work with people with a checklist, but when they meet someone who meets the requirements, there’s no chemistry. Love and attraction is all about feelings, and you can’t use logic to persuade yourself into a relationship.”

Every time I do some press, there are factual inaccuracies in the coverage. This is no different:

Sheiryn is a secondary school graduate (not “dropout”). I had been separated for 3 years when I met her (not “just ended his marriage”). And Sheiryn had several dating relationships before me (though I am the first guy to whom she has been exclusive). Still, it was a fun interview and photoshoot! And I love how they imply I’m Prince Charming

One thing we DO have in common is our love of travel.

In December, I flew to Orlando, USA, for a 5-day family reunion at the amazingly huge Disney World before flying back up to Toronto, Canada to spend Christmas with family. Here’s the impressive lightshow at one of the several Disney World theme parks there:

As you can see, travel is one of our shared passions.

In my many years experience traveling frequently for my Ph.D. research and work, as well as on travel related to my dating consulting, I’ve picked up a few tips that could help people, especially Singaporeans get more out of their travel experiences.

SINGAPOREANS AND TRAVEL

I notice that while Singaporeans love to travel around Southeast Asia, they often take budget carriers. I used to do this a lot when I first moved to Singapore. But then I started flying with them to go farther, including China, Australia, and India. That’s when I noticed I was accumulating fewer miles on my Star Alliance reward program. Since then, I only use budget airlines for regional flights (within Southeast Asia), unless it’s on one of their super saver sales with flights for 5 cents. Star Alliance is the world’s first and largest airline alliance.

AIR

While a national carrier or luxury airline (like Singapore Airlines or Thai Airways) will usually cost more than a budget carrier (like Air Asia, Tiger, or Jetstar), if you’re flying more than 35,000 miles a year, the perks are definitely worth it. And if you’re flying 50,000 miles, you’re eligible for Star Alliance Gold benefits. And sometimes, like when I recently looked up flights to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the budget airlines can be more expensive.

Since 2005, I’ve been an Air Canada Elite and Star Alliance Gold member and have really enjoyed all the perks, including free upgrades; priority standing for upgrades (especially when flying with a North American carrier); airport business class or first class lounge access; priority seat selection; checking in three bags of luggage free with extra weight allowance for each bag; and priority check-in, baggage handling, and boarding. While Air Canada has the best loyalty plan, imho, Thai Airways is also not bad. You don’t have to live in the country to sign up for that country’s airline’s loyalty plan.

If you’re spending a lot of time in US airports, then maybe lounge access is not a big deal since the airport lounges there all suck. But the lounges in Asia are wonderful. The United Red Carpet Lounge in Hong Kong always has several different opened bottles of red and white wine, a full bar of spirits, and a few different beers on tap, including sometimes Guinness. They also have a dim sum buffet, a small dessert bar, as well as a full meal buffet. The ANA lounge in Tokyo has a chef making fresh ramen noodle soup to order, in addition to a sushi bar. And it’s all complimentary.

And you can count miles on any airline in the Star Alliance. Here’s a list of member airlines, including Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, ANA in Japan, Asiana Airlines in Korea, Air China, Air Canada, Lufthansa, United, Continental, and US Airways.

If you have Gold standing with Star Alliance, all you have to do is call up Oneworld (which includes Cathay Pacific), and they’ll give you reciprocal standing and privileges to entice you to switch over.

If you do two round-trip flights to North America per year, you’re 80% of the way to Star Alliance Gold. So all expats should definitely be on a flight reward program. Trust me. It’s worth it.

HOTEL

Also, if you enjoy staying in hotels, you should definitely get on hotel reward plans. I know 95%+ of single Singaporean men in Singapore will live with mom and dad until they get married or turn 35. And I’m assuming they’re not doing it in public. So it seems Singaporean men are keeping domestic, low-end hotels in business. However, if you’re avoiding the Hotel 81’s and Fragrance Hotels (as you should), then you should definitely be counting your hotel stays toward membership standing.

Since 2008, I’ve also been a Gold Preferred Guest of the Starwood Hotels. I’m now also an elite member with several hotel chains, including the Fairmont Hotels, Hyatt Hotels, and Priority Club Rewards. I like Starwood’s selection of hotel brands the best, as they are well represented in Asia at a wide variety of price points: Le Meridien, Westin, The Luxury Collection, Sheraton, Four Points by Sheraton, St. Regis, and the W Hotels, which we enjoyed most recently in LA.

When getting elite status with a hotel alliance, you should focus on getting it with an alliance that has both lower end and higher end options. The Fairmont and Hyatt hotels don’t have low end versions, although they usually only require 5 stays a year, whereas the others require 10+ stays. The Starwood Hotels has the Four Points by Sheraton brand and the Priority Club Rewards has the Holiday Inn Express brand, for example, for when you want to just get a good night’s sleep and aren’t too picky about the rest of the facilities.

The perks I enjoy the most are the automatic room upgrade, the dedicated Starwood Preferred floors, and late check-out. Often, I also get Club Lounge access. You can read more about the Starwood Gold benefits here. You only need 10 stays or 25 nights a year to get these perks.

RENT A CAR

Also new to many Asians is that places are very spread out in North America and Australia, with Manhattan being the only exception I can think of.

Hence, when you’re visiting those countries for more than a couple days, always rent a car. If you return it to the same place you picked it up, it can be very cheap, like less than a $100 a week. And it’s a lot more fun!

TRAVEL INDEPENDENTLY

One last note. I know a lot of Asians are scared of stepping outside their comfort zone and exploring new places on their own, hence, the prevalence of those big and loud Chinese tour groups.

My recommendation is to avoid tour groups, especially in Asia, like the plague. Get a good travel guide. Use tripadvisor. Ask people who’ve been there. Book ahead. And plan and travel on your own.

Happy New Year from Aura Dating Academy and Dr. David Tian!

The year 2011 ended in a whirlwind for me with tons of special seminars, workshops, and extra off-the-hook crazy fun events at the Aura Dating Academy, as well as plenty of travel around California, Las Vegas, Thailand, Florida, and Canada.

Welcome to 2012! The post is a little late for the regular new year but just in time for the Lunar New Year in a couple of weeks, which is a really big deal in Singapore and East Asia. So here’s a quick round-up reflection from me, the Executive Director of Aura Dating Academy, on the past year. This will probably be a more personal post than you’ve seen on here since I moved to Singapore. And if you like this more personal tone and would like to see more such posts, make sure you let me know here in the comments or by email or on PM at the Academy facebook fan page.

Last year, 2011, was my first full year as a full-time business owner and entrepreneur. I resigned from my professorship at the National University of Singapore in 2010 and began 2011 with some trepidation because despite the tremendous success rate of my bootcamps and 1:1 coaching programs stretching back to 2007, I wasn’t sure if the Academy model would fly. It looked great on paper, but nobody (to my knowledge) in the whole world had ever attempted something like this–a full year’s training and mentorship for less than the price of a 3-day weekend bootcamp. Also, I had always had a back-up income, usually from a university professorship or research foundation fellowship. After the first couple of months of 2011, we had built a great membership base and accumulated enough capital for me to finally breathe a bit freer.

Little did I know that was just the start of it, as the momentum really picked up as the year went on. Most of our first batches of members came from word of mouth in the underground dating skills community. But as time passed, word got out to the mainstream media. In October, we were featured in a full-page spread in the leading national newspaper, The Straits Times.

We had other wonderful media coverage that year, as well, and there will be much more to come. To this day, we have never paid for advertising ever, except for the few dollars a day we put into facebook fan page ads. So we’re fortunate to have this national and international media coverage.

We were also fortunate to have many of the world’s top dating coaches swing by Singapore to visit and give talks and interviews at Aura Dating Academy. We’ve recorded most of these guest talks and some of them have been released to the general public in the “Inside the Players’ Lounge” interview series. Just this week, we were lucky to have Future of Love Systems come in for a three-hour no-holds-barred interview and Q&A at the Academy.

In November 2011, we were treated to a month-long residency by Christian Hudson, the co-founder of one of the largest dating skills companies in the world and now head of The Social Man based in New York City. He was also my very first mentor in the social arts and one my best friends, who’s been there for me through thick and thin. Needless to say, it was a real joy for me hosting his very first visit to Asia. A little shout-out to Kingpin for helping considerably with the hosting!

While he had agreed to do a public seminar and one weekend workshop during his stay, he ended up also giving four special 3-4 hour seminars for the Aura Dating Academy members, as well as three 3-hour 1:1 sessions and helping with two of our infield sessions on the Aura Dating Academy Rockstar Nights. Yeah, we really put him to work, haha! And all the events were hugely successful!

In fact, we got so many registrations (almost 200 people) for the free public seminar that we had to offer it on two separate evenings. Here’s a snapshot of the packed seminar room on the second night:

The Weekend Workshop we jointly led the following weekend was an extraordinary success for all six of the special participants. Good taste prevents me from elaborating further on the tangible results of that success but suffice it to say, the guys took girls home, and we made many women satisfied that weekend

Now that he’s back in the US, we’re working on editing and preparing not just our dare video (see this pre-visit interview to know what I’m talking about), but also a series of DVD courses that will teach you how to make her feel how you feel, featuring a step-by-step dating guide that covers everything from the pre-approach to approaching her to forming connections with her to escalating your relationship physically, all based on your own authentic and sincere feelings. This is going to be HUGE. Look for the official launch and release in the spring.

Before he headed back to the US, we took a fun trip to see the jungles and temples of Thailand, along with a good personal friend of ours and Sheiryn Aisiqa, to let loose and celebrate.

Then after spending Christmas with family in Florida and Canada, I made it back to Singapore just in time for New Year’s Eve.

Jakarta Dating: 5 Women with 1 Man and Client’s 1-Minute Pull–Approach Coach Lt. Walker’s Report on Recent Aura Dating Academy Overseas Trip (Alumni LR)

This crazy report comes from Lt. Walker, a young Singaporean of Indian descent and Asia’s top approach coach. To learn more about him, you can catch Lt. Walker’s interview on Inside the Players’ Lounge here.

He has been leading Aura Dating Academy Overseas Trips and this is his report from the first trip, which was to Jakarta in early December. You’re in for a real treat!

Usual disclaimer: Reports can be good learning tools because we can learn a lot from the past. These reports can help beginners get inside the mindsets and attitudes of successful daters. You also get a look at some of the techniques and strategies that have worked for others. In short, LRs are good ‘case studies’ in the dating arts. I’ve replaced all real names. Some place names and other identifying details have also been altered. None of the names or photos are of the real people involved. I know that some “pick up” companies use real photos, often without the girls’ permission (some of my female friends have been exploited this way). I maintain complete confidentiality for all involved, unless they request to be identified. Respect their privacy.

Without further ado… Lt. Walker!

Jakarta. I’ve travelled nearly all of asia now and Jakarta is no doubt the craziest I’ve been to in terms of the party scene. Where else do you find 24 hour clubs?

However, the primary reason for going to Jakarta this time was for non-dating-related work, but I decided to squeeze in an Aura Academy Overseas Trip with Echow, Takeshi and Mojo, with PlayerP joining us on a later late.

The last time I was at Jakarta we ripped it apart, and I was more than eager to show the guys a great weekend.

DAY 1

On the first night, after entertaining business clients, I meet up with the guys at Club X. Mojo brought a girl along as always and he settles by the bar. That man is never alone :p

My main aim at this point is to get Echow and Takeshi in a good state.

I see Echow looking up at the girl dancing in the podium. “You like her don’t you,” I tease him. He nods. “What about her do you like?” He says he likes the way she moves, its very elegant but sexy at the same time .

She’s up in the podium, its not going to be easy, but as always, give it a shot. I advise him to get her attention first and quickly get her down from there.

He goes over and gently taps her. She looks down at him with a blur face. He signals her over to bend down a little bit, and he whispers in her ears. She smiles. He leads her down gently from the podium and to the bar.

I nearly wept at this point. He was soft and gentle with her just like how a real gentlemen should be like.

Never be the aggressive guy swinging your hands around women or grabbing them. She’s a lady, soft delicate and beautiful. Treat her like one .

I head over to the bar to check up on how Echows doing and ………………….. I see them making out.

I turn around to see Takeshi in conversation and I go over to help him out.

Echow suddenly comes back at this point of time and I ask him what happened. He says he doesn’t know. “The girl just left,” he says. Weird.

He doesn’t waste much time though and he talks to another girl. Within less than a minute in conversation the friend of the girl tells Echow. “Hey, my friend likes you, you can keep her.” And the friend of the girl leaves just like that. Just like that!

Echow just takes her hand and they leave the club. Within a freakin minute!!!

He texts us that he’s heading back to hotel and soon after Mojo comes over to say bye too and leaves with his girl. So far, so good. 

DAY 2

Its 3 PM. We do a debrief and Echow tells me how the night before shattered his reality. Isn’t this what the journey is all about? Shattering your realities over and over till you don’t believe anything is impossible anymore. .

They suggest to head to Club XX tonight. I tell them I’ll meet them a little late as well as I’ve to go got to finish up some business first.

At about 2 AM, I head over to Club XX and it is crowded! I try to call the guys many times but I can’t get through. I walk around once to look for them but to no avail. Ahh well, I head over to the bar to get some drinks and make small talk with the people around me.

Finally I see the guys walking past and I nudge them. After talking to a few people I finally see a girl I like.

I go up to her and tell I think she’s beautiful. She smiles and we continue to fluff talk for a little while and she introduces me to her friend.

Mojo comes over to help out. We start dancing and I can read by her body language that she’s ready so I pull her away to the dancefloor and pretty soon we’re making out.

She then brings me back to her table and introduces me to more of her friends. She talks to them in Bahasa (the language spoken by Indonesians) and I just sit back relax and let them talk. It seems like their teasing her about me. She gets shy and comes and hugs me. “You guys shouldn’t tease her like that,” I tell her friends.

The rest of the girls seem to like me and start taking photos and keep offering me drinks. I try to bounce with my girl but she says she has to wake up early tomorrow. Darn! I try to convince her friends too but to no go 

By this time I’ve lost the guys but no complaints.

My girl and I continue to cuddle and just continue some light kissing. I don’t wanna be the douche who tries to stuff his tongue down a girls throat infront of her friends.

Its reaching closing time soon and they store the bottle and start to leave. My girl just pulls me along and I just go with the flow. They offer to drive me back and I seed the bounce for supper once again and finally one of the girls who I later conclude to be the leader says she’s hungry.

I seed a bounce to my hotel claiming that there’s an amazing 24hr restaurant right below…… or at least I thought there was, HAHA.

In the car ride back, they keep teasing me and I try to speak some bahasa which comes out horrible and they all just start laughing. As we reach the hotel, we just head up to the room and they ask about supper. I say no worries we’ll just order it to the room.

When we get to the room, everyone gets into the bed and I kick start the pillow fight! HAHA. Soon I pretty much lose out to 5 women who hit me as if I’m the most evil man on earth. Well, I am. Haha.

I realize I have to slow things down. Too much energy leads to no sex. Sex is slow, smooth intense. We take a breather and just start fluff talking and also being slightly playful to maintain the buying temperature.

I call over the rest of the guys to my room. Sharing is caring ain’t it? They come over for 2 mins and leave. No idea why.

I dim down the room lights and start kissing my girl. Another girl decides to join in by ripping off my shirt and one more comes in to bite my nipples. We start taking a lot of photos, and one more comes in and pulls my pants down. I’m pretty much manhandled at this point, haha. I woke up in the morning lying beside 4 women. Life’s good.

DAY 4

With Echow, Mojo, and Takeshi leaving the night before, I’m more than glad for the arrival of PlayerP. We head out to what was supposedly the classiest club in Jakarta which had an amazing ambience. However, since it was a weekday the club was only half full but we decided to stay a while anyway. We decided to head to another club nearby which I had lots of fun the last time I was in Jakarta.

As expected this place was better, but the lights had already been switched on.

We head to the bar anyway and on our way there guess who we spot!! The 4 girls!!! HAHAHA. They run up and start hugging me and start scolding me for not calling them again. :p I tell them I have no excuse and that I’m an ass.

They introduce me to two of their male friends. One Singaporean and the other some white dude. The guys try to “act” all friendly and start commanding me to do stuff. I do my usual. I just ignore them. Don’t give them my approval. Simple as that.

One of their friends–the hottest of them all–that I’ve seen before comes up to me and says, “Hey I know you! I’ve seen your photos. One guy with four girls!” and she just keeps repeating that phrase. One guy with four girls.

I just laugh it off and say, “ Yes, I’m a lucky guy! It’s not my fault that all your friends are so pretty” She sits next to me I can pretty much sense that she’s into me. How can I tell? Experience.Experience.Experience.

I lead her out the balcony and we fluff for awhile before I go in for the kiss. We kiss for awhile before we get chased out by the security since the club was closing. Funny thing is that this was the same spot I had a makeout the last time I was in Jakarta. HAHA

We all head out and they tell us that they’re bringing us to some 24 hr club. The other guys tag along and keeps trying to talk to me. I give them a few one-word answers and just continue to ignore them. When we reach the club it seems like its some Mafia run place and we have to go through a metal detector and I catch a glimpse a gun storage area behind the counter. Jakarta is so bad-ass and I really don’t think I belong. Haha.

We head in and the crowd is not exactly friendly. The girls order a bottle and some of them go the dance floor. PlayerP gets bored and he says I’ll be back. I continue to escalate with my girl and things are getting pretty heavy. I tell her I need to go the toilet and ask her to come along.

When we reach the toilet I ask her to sneak me in. :p We go in and some girls give us a weird stare. I slam her in the booth and we start to make out. She says we could get in trouble. I say, “Isn’t that the point?”

Suddenly someone opens the toilet door and drags me out by my neck. It’s the bouncers and they are not happy one bit. There are 3 of them. They slam me against the wall and they don’t look friendly. The girl comes in and tries to persuade them. I apologise repeatedly. Somehow I escape and we both laugh on our way back to the couch. “I told you we’ll get into trouble,” she reminds me, haha. In a mafia run club in a foreign land, I definitely didn’t make the wisest of choices.

It’s hitting 9 AM, and I can’t take it. We decide to head back and the girls offer to drop us off. We all squeeze in the car and I ask my girl to follow me back. She whispers in my ear that her friends will get angry. I then jus shout on in the car, “Hey, you guys mind if I bring your friend back with me?” They tell me I can keep her. 

I was confident at this point cause I knew all the girls liked me so I would have no worries. Furthermore, the other guys were in the car, kinda like a pie in their faces. We reach the hotel and PlayerP winks and tells me he’ll go to his room. He had no room in actual fact! We were sharing one. Talk about a great wingman! Thanks PlayerP.

She and I spend the night together and the next day she takes me out for dinner and drives me around paying for everything. I offered to pay but she would get angry. This girl was an absolute sweetheart. It was difficult not to fall in love with her. We’ve been keeping in touch, and she says she might come to Singapore, so who knows

Food for Thought Approaching the New Year

Merry Christmas to you in whatever part of the world you’re currently celebrating in!

A couple weeks ago, I flew from Singapore to meet family in Orlando, Florida, USA to spend a week at Disney World. I hadn’t been there since I was 14, and maaan, has it grown. Before I arrived, I wondered how I was going to spend a whole week at an amusement park. That was before I realized it featured 8 theme parks, each bigger than the Disneyland in LA, and a total land area almost the size of all of Singapore! Highly recommended.

And then, I flew with the family back to Toronto, Canada, where I am celebrating Christmas as it should be with family and attending church :-) I still find it hard to believe that many Singaporeans only think of Christmas as a major party holiday. My experience of Christmas growing up was always of church services and family dinners.

As you think about your new new year’s resolutions and goals, here’s some food for thought:
