Two of the Top Naturals in the World: Russell Brand & Robbie Williams

April 5, 2009

Just a reminder that my Sunday column in Singapore’s The New Paper will no longer be updated here. If you want to keep up with the weekly articles, check them out at powerofbeingasian.com

Two naturals that have inspired Nick, Christian, myself, and many other “gurus” are Russell Brand and Robbie Williams (NOT, thank god, Edison Chen, lol). Incidentally, they are both connected to Neil Strauss. Russell and Neil are friends after having met each other through Courtney Love. Brand wrote an endorsement for Strauss’s book, Rules of The Game. Robbie Williams “stole” Neil’s girlfriend at the time, Lisa Leveridge.

Here are a few of my favorite youtube clips.

1. Russell Brand, the master of High-Energy Vibe. See my Dating 101 audio course for extended explanations of High-Energy Vibe vs. Chilled-Out Cool. Brand’s style really gels well with his chosen identity. He is up-front about who is and what he is about, and this courageous, cheeky honesty resonates well with his audience.

First up is Brand’s interview of Mila Jovovich and her business partner. Notice how he gets sexual right away and calibrates with a takeaway release and IOD calibrators. He keeps up the rakishness throughout. Also notice Jovovich testing him hard in the beginning, making fun of his accent (until he steals the frame by using the “exaggerate to absurdity” technique–brilliant), then taking the approval-giver frame (”No but I love your accent”), pointing out his spitting (great neg by her and handled perfectly by Brand, who catapulted off it into more escalation), and more. Check it out the clip here:

Also excellent is Brand’s interview with Nerina Pallot. What I like about Pallot is that she’s smart, quick-witted, down-to-earth, doesn’t stand for bull, and tests Brand relentlessly. The interview’s in two parts on youtube and runs a good length. The banter here is fantastic. Nerina: “You’re still a bit mental, aren’t you?” “Do you like frocks?” “Thus the hair.” “You should get out more.” “Do you think of this stuff in the middle of the night and then save it?” Watch Brand give a master class in flirting and frame control. Simply fascinating.

Finally, the most outrageous interview ever. Not only is he completely hilarious and cocky-funny, Brand is in-your-face sexual all the way through, escalating smoothly all the way to humorously propositioning the interviewer for a threesome, “You silly girl, I can’t make you come from there. I’m not that charismatic!” He uses lots of role-playing to escalate like crazy here, LMAO.

2. Robbie Williams. The definition of a classic Rake.

In this first clip, see Robbie apply at will Emotional Contagion. He’s really over the top here, so it’s a caricature, but it’s a good illustration of how powerful this can be. Enjoy.

Great self-deprecating, direct game here in this short clip.

There’s another clip somewhere on youtube in a European language in which he gets the very attractive interviewer to join him for a cuddle in bed by the end of the interview. Can’t be bothered to find it now, but do a search on youtube.

So there you go. I trust that despite their contrasting styles, you can begin to see the similarities between these two exemplars of the rake character.

Play on, The Asian Rake.

S’funny - I was day dreaming the other day about people I know (from my past and also well known people) who have a lot of behaviours that ‘Game’ tries to teach. And I also came up with these two guys.

What struck me about these two is something they also have in common. Severe addiction issues.

Lots of natural game tries to teach that ‘natural attraction’ comes from genuinely liking yourself and your life, and being wholly non-outcome dependent.

I suspect that the opposite is at play here, though. Like many of us, my guess is that both Brand and Williams (I love both of these guys by the way) are never happy or content, and always feel something is missing from their lives. So they turn to addictions in an attempt to fill that void.

And gaming is another addiction. They love the adrenalin rush from getting reactions out of others. And ultimately I think it indicates that *intent* is key.

You can be as natural and as happy as you want, but if you don’t *actively* try and pull (Brand admits his success is partly down to the sheer number of women he games) then you won’t get much success. But the secret is to not *act* needy, even if you are :-)

Check out the book ‘Feel’ by Chris Heath for some great insights into the difference between ‘Robbie’ which is the persona used for playing to a crowd and ‘Rob’ who is a much shyer, insecure, more private person. This just gave me a massive level of respect for RobbieW.

    Sub5stance and Johnny,
    Glad you liked these.

Good point about the addictive personalities. I don’t know that much about Robbie W., but Brand has a great autobiography that just came out, and it’s very detailed. As usual with anyone living a rockstar lifestyle, there’s plenty of drugs, booze, and women.

    jl,
    Do a search.

    Cheers, David.

Yep, I agree. Love these two - I’ve mentioned Brand on my blog before as well.

I noticed how up front Brand was the first time I saw his comedy. He is completely over the top and brutally honest about this behavior.
