As if Hong Kong’s airport wasn’t nice enough
July 29, 2008
My Air Canada flight to Hong Kong was actually early. That now makes two AC flights that have arrived early in a row for me within the past week. My opinion of AC is slowly going up.
And now I’m in Hong Kong for a couple of hours waiting for my connection to Singapore. Can’t f-ckin’ wait!
Being back in Asia always gets my mojo going. I’ve slept maybe 7 hours total in the last two days, but my internal energy got revved up and going once I landed in HK. Happens for me every time…
Since the spring, I’ve been on Elite status with the airlines, so I’ve been hanging out in airline lounges a lot lately. I’m one of the few who can actually take the time to enjoy the amenities, unlike most of the suits around me, working on their blackberries and laptops. I think after another several visits, the novelty will wear off, as it does with almost all luxuries. But I’m enjoying every bit of it so far.
The Maple Leaf Lounge in Toronto’s new Terminal One is quite nice, and now I’m sipping free flow draft beer (Kilkenny, in this case) and nibbling on treats from the dim sum buffet in the lounge in the Hong Kong airport. Nice view of the towers and planes coming in.
I’ve been downing alcohol since I boarded the plane from Toronto (I think the crew flagged me as an alki, hehe), so I think I’m going to switch to water and juice soon. But it’s hard to resist sampling the 9 different reds and 7 different white wines, plus the extensive hard liqour bar, which is all complimentary in the lounges. I was a little peeved that they weren’t serving the beer and wine when I showed up to the lounge in Toronto at 8 in the morning. Hey, for all they knew, it could’ve been 8 pm for me! lol.
I’m very happy now… There’s nothing like looking down on the north pole from 30,000 feet up while buzzed on your fifth scotch whisky. Sure makes those long flights go by pretty fast. Being happy also helps in social interactions ![]()
Happy playin’, The Asian Rake.

Welcome back to Asia!
how do you get ‘Elite’ status with the airlines?
(serious question)
Szechy
Hey Szechy,
Thanks! It’s good to be back.
For Star Alliance Gold, I needed 35000 status miles in one calendar year. That’s basically two roundtrips from Toronto to Singapore, so I’m now well over that.
Make sure all your comped flights are on the same airline network, and get all the miles counted.
Cheers, The Asian Rake.
